In accordance with section 4 of the Foreign Investment Reform (Protecting Australia’s National Security) Act 2020, the Treasury has conducted an evaluation of the foreign investment reforms that commenced on 1 January 2021.

The evaluation considered the impact that the reforms and their implementation have had on foreign investment in Australia and the broader Australian economy, and whether the right balance is struck between welcoming foreign investment and protecting Australia’s national interests.

To help inform the evaluation, the Treasury invited interested stakeholders to submit written submissions between 27 July and 31 August 2021 on the operation and performance of the reforms.

The final report of the evaluation was provided to the Treasurer on 10 December 2021. As required by legislation, the final report was tabled in Parliament within 15 sitting days of that date, on 14 February 2022.
