Small and medium-sized banks review

On 8 July 2024, the Treasurer asked the Council of Financial Regulators (CFR) in consultation with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), to conduct a review of the small and medium-sized banking sectors.

Terms of reference

The review aims to examine:

  • the role and state of small and medium-sized banking sectors in providing competition
  • the regulatory and market trends affecting their competitiveness and
  • the current and potential future sources of and barriers to competition from these sectors.

Consultation

The CFR and ACCC will:

  • run consultations with targeted stakeholders
  • publish a consultation paper.

Findings

The CFR will provide a final report to the government by 1 July 2025.
