The government is working to support safe and responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) uses.
The government conducted reviews of laws to assess how they apply to AI use. This includes a review of AI in health settings and classrooms.
This review of AI and the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) is part of this work.
The ACL is a national law which aims to protect consumers and improve their wellbeing.
This review aimed to understand:
- how the ACL applies to AI goods and services
- whether ACL protections are suitable.
To support it, Treasury ran a consultation. A wide range of people and organisations contributed.
The review found that the ACL, when combined with other laws, can still protect consumers in the context of AI goods and services.
Consumer Affairs Ministers around Australia agreed that it’s important to continue monitoring consumer laws. This makes sure the laws are still effective.
Federal, state and territory governments will now consider the review’s findings.
