On 26 September 2024, the 2024 Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) took place in Beijing. It was co‑chaired by Jim Chalmers, Australian Treasurer, and Chairman Zheng Shanjie, Chair of the National Development and Reform Commission of the People’s Republic of China.

The co‑chairs then signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Continuing the Bilateral Seminar Cooperation Program between the Australian Treasury and the National Development and Reform Commission of the People’s Republic of China. The MoU:

  • re‑establishes a bilateral seminar cooperation program
  • aims to improve communication, exchanges, and practical economic cooperation between Australia and China
  • covers topics of mutual interest, focusing on:
    • global and regional macroeconomic environments
    • economic challenges
    • policy settings in Australia and China
    • fiscal policies
  • replaces a MoU signed in 2014.

The seminars will be annual and either:

  • virtual
  • in‑person – in:
    • Australia or
    • China.
