The Government commissioned a joint Treasury/Reserve Bank Taskforce to recommend appropriate action for dealing with issues relating to expenditure on ATM fees and the cost of ATM access in very remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The Taskforce recommended working with industry to reduce the impact of ATM fees in some very remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The Government has welcomed the launch of a new initiative by the Australian banking industry and two major independent ATM companies to provide free transactions at selected ATMs across very remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the Northern Territory, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia.
