Following the 2024 Annual Leaders’ Meeting between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Canberra on 17 June 2024, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Australia‑China bilateral Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) was signed by Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Vice‑Chairman Liu Sushe.
The signing was witnessed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Li Qiang.
The MoU establishes a framework for the SED – a ministerial dialogue jointly led by the Australian Treasurer and the Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission of the People’s Republic of China.
The aim of the SED is to strengthen communication and exchanges, and promote effective, practical economic cooperation between Australia and China.
The SED will focus on the following strategic and forward‑looking economic topics:
- Macroeconomic environments and policy settings in Australia, China and globally;
- Economic challenges and reform policies;
- Fiscal policies;
- Investment trends and policies; and
- Other topics and areas of cooperation that are of interest.
The SED is intended to be held annually and will be conducted alternatively in Australia and China, as mutually determined.
Other Australian and Chinese ministers and senior government officials may participate in the SED regarding specific and relevant topics.
The SED MOU has taken effect as of the signing on 17 June 2024, and will remain in effect for an initial period of 5 years and for subsequent periods of 5 years each unless otherwise specified by participants.
