Treasurers met today to discuss reform priorities ahead of the Albanese government’s Economic Reform Roundtable next week.
The Reform Roundtable is all about building consensus around long-term economic reform.
Making our economy more prosperous and productive, robust and resilient requires collaboration and cooperation across the Federation and that was the focus of today’s meeting.
Treasurers agreed to work together to advance 4 priority areas of economic reform:
- Faster approvals for major projects, with a focus on national priority infrastructure.
- Better regulation, by cutting back regulatory burdens and reducing areas of regulatory overlap, to make it easier for businesses to grow, invest and hire workers.
- Boosting competition, by implementing the next phase of National Competition Policy reforms.
- Building more homes faster, by breaking down barriers to housing supply and speeding up approvals and reducing regulatory burden on builders.
Treasurers also agreed to continue to work together to develop a model for road user charging, noting that this process would take time.
The next meeting will take place following next week’s Economic Reform Roundtable to settle a program of work to advance a shared reform agenda.
